Many states require counselors or school in a state school counseling certification and who have completed some college course work. Most schools have a master.

o At least 2 years of supervised field experience in a counseling setting. The exception is for graduate from counselor education programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.
o Provide two professional endorsements (one must be from a recent supervisor)
The national certification is voluntary. It is distinct from State licensing. In some states, those who pass the national exam do not have to take the State certification exam.

To achieve certification, consultants must take and pass the test or total of 100 points of acceptable credit hours of training every 5 years.
